Methods of Nasal Irrigation

Saline solutions can be delivered to the nasal passages in a number of different ways.

  • Neti Pot
  • Positive pressure devices
  • Pulsatile irrigation devices
  • Atomiser sprays
  • Snorting of saline

Neti Pot

A Neti Pot is the most traditional form of nasal irrigation. This method has been practised for hundreds of years by yogis (yoga practitioners). Using a Neti Pot takes roughly four minutes to perform.

To have a positive experience with neti pot it is important that both the correct technique and correct saline solution are used. An incorrect solution may not only be lacking in beneficial effects but may also irritate the lining of the nose. Incorrect technique can lead to saline travelling down into the throat leading to great discomfort and coughing.
